I am Vinayak Surve, a Veterinarian from Mumbai. My childhood and teenage life is spent in Sahyadri, Konkan region, Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra. Naturally, I have some experience of crossing hills, rivers, forest and different challenging trails.

Thought about going to Kaurava Kunda trek was exciting to me because it was my first trek with experienced trekking group where I was supposed to meet new friends with great interest in trekking. I received an email from Patrick (organizer) and rushed to buy trekking tools and gears like wind jacket, sleeping bag, torch, snacks, etc. Sharing this pre-trekking excitement was great fun with friends, family, colleagues and everyone whom I met during that week.

1 It was my first trek with Bangalore ASCENDers (BASC), I was so excited about the event and I called Vinay many times to know the details about the trek. Common meeting point was at Jayanagar 4th block near Jain Temple, we gathered at 7.30 PM but started journey by 8.30 PM.
IMG_8254-SMILESince we all were hungry we decided to have food on the way, so we went to Kamath hotel and finished food and started journey by 10.30 PM.
There were 3 cars, I was in Promod’s car, Kunal and Sathish were accompanying along with me and we started our journey towards Kabbal-durga. It was a great journey, in-between Pramod was cracking nice jokes.

All right! Here goes my first write-up for Bangalore Ascenders. It had been a while since I did a night trek, so even a short one of a couple of hours held the excitement in me. Darkness has it’s own light: something which many people forget! But the more important excuse was it was the birthday of BASC.

So the evening of 19th April found a group of “not-complete-strangers” and “we-all-love-BASC” standing outside the KSRTC Mysore Satellite Bus Stand. Once we all had gathered, we started out for the trek without much ado. Midway, we decided to grab a bite and we stopped at the way-side restaurant. After much discussion over the dinner (read: I was discussing with my tummy whether a south meal or a north meal would be right), I chose the wrong one: the north meal, and realized this, the moment the south meals were served. Well no harm done. They say hunger is the best sauce, and it always is true.

Once the dinner was done, and I had tucked away my usual “Orbit – Lime flavored” strip in my arm pouch we were raring to go. In our car (piloted by Ravindra), we had a good time, discussing wildlife, cycling and Bangalore roads! And soon we had reached the village from where our trek was supposed to start.

After a couple and a bit more kilometers in the dark, a few wrong turns, and spotting black scorpions (the poisonous kind) we were on the right trail. For both me and Ravindra, the steep initial climb meant that we had to put our cameras back in our back packs. Then once the initial trail was covered, me and Akshatha fell behind, to stay a bit farther away from the torch lights. I tell you, darkness has its own light. The hills and the valleys in between looked so beautifully still in the light of the night. The sky was cloudy, hence all the stars were hidden above their generous cover. Slowly we climbed the trail, me making sure that I sweep the group (it was then that I realized that I take lead only when it is a completely unknown trail, the joy of finding untouched and un-trodden paths are a sheer joy).3_CampFire
Collecting some twigs for the fire, we started climbing up slowly. By the time we reached to the top, the folks had already settled down and were getting ready for the camp fire! And it was the sight at the top that always takes your breath away. On one side, were the city lights, and on the other, was the mask of perpetual darkness. Far on the eastern side, we could see small lights on the hills: signs of civilization. And on the west was the shades of dark. And amongst us were friends who shared the

Well I am not much of a writer but just I have shared the thoughts and the journey from my end so that we can look at it after days and remember the time we spent together.

DSC_0211 Night trek to Bramhagiri was conducted by Bangalore ASCENDers (BASC) on 18th January 2014. The moment we all met up in Platform-9 it was one heck of a journey. To start of with, we were in wrong platform with no idea of which train to climb into until BKS called up asked. That’s when we realized we are in wrong platform & ran to platform 8 and got into train. Subratho was supposed to enter in a DDLJ style but could not make it, probably he was not as fast of Kajol, but jokes apart, sorry that he missed it.

DSC_0279 We took out attendance and some informal introductions in the train. The moment we started with dumb charades is when it lit up more. We were so involved that we would have missed the Nandi stop if it was not for Mudassar (of-course he was the organizer). Got down and went on with formal undertaking and introduction while Mudassar was negotiating with Auto. After a long 4 kms auto (since I was in back seat & Jyothsna was continuously saying she was hungry) we finally got down at our trek's starting point. Packed food at nearest cafe and told the owner to be ready with next day's breakfast. By almost 9 we started ascending just when the moon started giving us its light to carry further.

DSC_0043We trekked for almost an hour and half and came to dinner point where we had some nice view of the city and airport. We took photos, had moon light dinner and some more photos before we continue our trek. With my obsession of being in front of the group, I carried on with Mudassar and Preetham. We took wrong right turns searching for the temple; after 5 wrong turns we reached the temple by around 11PM. We explored the surroundings and gathered wood for campfire. After cutting birthday cake we started with individual trek stories, BASC blood camp initiatives and others. After all the fun we tried sleeping for few hours by around 2.30AM. When I opened my eyes at 4.15AM all I can see is a human standing next to door seeing out, got scared. It was Mr. George who apparently could not sleep. Eventually everyone got up and it was cold!! We went for fire and thankfully it was still burning. We spent the next one hours constantly struggling to burn the damp wood and finding that warm air from the fire.

DSC_0117By almost 5.30am we took the stairs for peak and found that it’s even more cold and windy. We all snuggled up behind a rock to avoid the wind where I listened to iPod. It was one of the most amazing moments of this trek. We took group photos and fooled around a bit till 6.30am but sun was still not up. Also thanks to Surabhi's impeccable mobile network service that we confirmed that there are no train back on Sunday. Then we decided it’s time for us to head back, started descending half way through we saw the sun rise, started picking up whatever trash we can find (thanks Preetham for this), lost our way badly and lost track of  other half team. Finally everyone grouped up reached the cafe and probably did more business to that cafe owner than any single day of his life. We took the bus back to Bangalore and this is where I had the best one hour sleep of my life.

Now thinking back thanks to Mudassar for arranging it so nicely without any hiccups and all of you who made it as one of the most memorable trek for me.

Here comes the first trek of the year. From the very start the plan was a roller coaster ride. I persuaded my friends (Tiwari and Piyush) to come for a BASC trek and I ended up not making to the list. Later the wait list got cleared and we went for the trek.

DSCN2575As opposed to previous experiences, this time I went from train. We all assembled at platform 9 at around 5:30 PM and suddenly got the news that this is the wrong platform. We rushed to platform 8 and boarded the train. We had great rounds of dumb charades on way to base camp. After reaching a small village we reached the base camp from an Auto (two fully packed autos). Our stomach already started asking for food. We packed some food from hotel and had tea & nariyal-pani. We started climbing at around 9PM.

As we were there for a more special purpose celebration of Tiwari's Birthday, I was hoping that we should reach top before 12AM. Apart from frequent chocolate/biscuit breaks we killed our most of the time in getting ourselves by anyone having the camera. Some people got new names on the trek (for instance - Majnu). In between DSC_0132 we had a break where we enjoyed fried rice and tomato rice. Surbhi enjoyed it more than anyone else as she liked the curry a little more than others.

We reached the night camping site just in time (@ 11:55PM). Piyush and I quickly started assembling the cake we bought with us. We celebrated the birthday there. It was a very unique experience to me at-least, I hope Tiwari also felt the same. Fortunately, the cake came out well and everyone enjoyed, we also had the camp fire going on. Mudassar and Shrinivas  exchanged some BASC programs and Trek stories, which were very interesting. At about 2AM the fire started dying and temperature started dropping. I didn't wanted to sleep as I wanted to make sure that I am up at sunrise. Still we had a small nap in freezing cold.

DSCN2581When I woke I saw George's silhouette at the door right in front of me. We were very happy to see that fire hadn’t died completely so we enjoyed it for some more time. Around 6AM we reached the peak where it was freeze cold. We had to hide behind a rock to avoid the chilly winds. After sometime we had some clicks and then we started descending. While on our way back, we lost track of the correct path which delayed the plan a bit. But overall it was a nice experience.

DSCN2585 It was a wonderful trek with BASC. Trekking in moonlight has always enthralled me. In short, it's a beautiful memory of playing dumb charades in train with loads of fun, a moonlight dinner over bed of rocks, trekking in the moon-lit trail to the temple, cold windy night, incinerating the remnants of doors and windows from the temple (that we eventually rejoiced as 'Camp fire'), birthday celebration of Ravindra, inspiring/scaring experiences of Mudassar's OG ventures, exploring the camping place with less than 100m visibility etc...

Our struggle to find the way back to the village in the morning mist engulfed us all around, truly added some fun and we ended up doing little exploration in a small over-night trek! It was an icing on the cake.

Thank you guys for making this trek delightful. This will always make me feel exuberant whenever I take a look at that full moon and contemplate about my next moonlight trek to relive every moment! Happy trekking!

IMG_7293Back from another good night trek with BASC, this time it was Brahmagiri, near to Nandi Hills.
Bhramagiri is the adjacent peak to the famous Nandi hills in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka. This place is around 60 KMS from Bangalore. Best way to reach this place is by your own transport. There are plenty of buses plying between Chikkaballapur district and Kempegowda bus station (Majestic).

Even though I love to write my experience in Kannada this time I am writing it in English, since I organized this trek and some Non-Kannadigas were part of it.

About Nijagal Betta:Nijagal Betta” which is situated in Bangalore -Tumkur Highway(NH-4) near to Dabaspet. Foot steps are there so it is very easy to climb. We Can reach the peak in 1 to 1½  hours.

Ruins have their own charm and historical importance and Nijagal Betta is one of those which is a proof of ruined Kingdom. It is with full of ruined caves, forts and temples.

A mid-seventeenth century fort, build by Chikkadevaraya Wadiyar, adorns this hillock. Here in Nijagal Betta, it’s believed that a war was fought between Hyder Ali and Peshwa Madhav Rao.
In Durgastamaana (kannada novel by T.R.Subbarao famous as ತ.ರ.ಸು) there is a mention about Nijgal fort like how strong the fort was and how Chitradurga Paalegaara Madakari Nayaka who supported Hyder Ali acquired Nijgal Fort

That was a" Gusty Windy Night Trek" (Saturday-sunday, 15th sep Posting this after a long time ) . after a few drop outs and last minute registrations finally 23 ASCENDers made it to the trek. A simple Trek turned out be an "ad-hoc" Adventure. we left the concrete jungle at 8.00 PM on saturday which was supposed to be at 5.30PM Thanks to "Bangalore City Traffic."  We started to trek from a village called  "Manchenbele" started moving towards "Kaurava halli" in the dark night lit with stars around us. there came a Question from one of the participant called " Varun" - Vinay last event was a Moon light trek to "Chennagiri", y cant we see any moon this time ?? so my obvious answer was " Dude that was moon light trek and this is a "No Moon" trek. there were Giggles among the participants and " pallavi" was trying to spot some "Ghosts" in the TAMARIND TREES" . "Pallavi even Ghosts are scared of you" Lolz.

The "trek" route was into the Farm fields, lakes, villages, and highways. Dogs greeted us as we entered Villages. Thank god no one Mistook our Group for "Dandupalya Gang" as the Dog barks wakened the villagers from their deep sleep. Thanks to our Doctru who Communicated to the villagers about our trek.

After loosing the trails a couple of times we finally made it to the camping place. the Camp Fire started tio Roar in the heavy winds at 3 A.M, the intro session happend amidst the chilling winds and warming camp fire which went on till 4.30A.M with some fun and entertainment. Then We people decided to sleep and started Erecting the tents, the wind was Robust and turbulent, it was a herculean task in Erecting the tent. the wind was soo turbulent one could feel the lift of his body from the ground. it was an amazing feeling. One amongst the 5 tents erected Flew off at 5AM and it was Our "Doctor Harish's " My sleep of 15min ( One hand holding the Tent grill tightly and with one leg lifted supporting the tent) ended here when i heard screams from every one " Tent Haroithu, Tent Haroithu" uffffffffffff............. Then we began folding the tent, in the process the wind almost lifted Varun and mighty Asst Professor Mr.Bagurrrrrrrrr...
Soon we finished our breakfast and started decending down, A small elephant Tata Magic was waiting for us which ferried 24 of us to the Destinations where we parked our vehicles, people sat on Roof mud gaurd and hanged on railings, One could imagine a  "Fevicol" ad people sticking on to a lorry :P.

Once Again Thanks to our "Doctru Harish" Who helped us park our vehicles and also handling the Villagers, he is been soo kind to us ( though made it a bit late to the start point). 1000 Thanks to him for all the help. And last but not the least to the entire team of 22 U were simply gr8 miss you and hope to see you all in the future treks.

Write up from Chaitanya Adumisili

Hi Vinay,

Here goes brief description & feedback on our trip:

Had nice nice trek with group of 23 to "Kaurava Kunda". This trek was of less duration when compared to my previous night treks. However, has excellent time while treking & on top of hill with group. Navigating is pretty difficult as we dont know the exact route & as it is night time. Saw how the villagers are very attentive if unknown people are walking through their houses in groups. 4-5 villages came out of their houses with big polls as their security. Breezes are pretty high and tents didnt withstand for that velocity. Had fun with group around campfire. Wish such treks comes in our way & BASC organizes them :)

Write up from Madhu Bagur

Hello Bangalore Ascenders,

It was on a thursday when i came across a mail for a trek in a known area of Chikkaballapur, But had never ventured before into it ( as same as our Vinay

--  first timer in all places). made up my mind by seeing the topic of driving to the point. As BASC has always been a good companion for having a nice trek.

So came to the final moments where we were supposed to meet at CBI junction at 5.30 as told by Vinay, As i stay in kengeri road, I and Varun n Srini decided to

reach the same road a little further after Hebbal Flyover. We were there exactly at 5.40 pm. We never knew that we wud have to wait for nearly 2 hrs for all to come n leave.

But all happens for good as we had a McD in Esteem Mall, Ate n even packed for further Trek also...

Now Coming to the main part as the information of the previous trek was over flowing from Srini n Varun tht they had done with "Doctre" n one more famous person for me was "PRIYA". coz of her driving skills n her chubbyness.. people were crazily telling there exp's with all the people of the previous night trek to channagiri where they had very less light and was out of trek through the trek.. So i was actually waiting in complete horror as it was an amavasya night also. coz the night trek that i have gone r in pornomi night's.

Later came the team in 3 cars n two bike in one was this priya abt whom to be precise i was spell bounded by seeing her. so the question i asked her was r u " The Priya"... LOLZ.... n Arun was like "OMG yene nin bagge ellargu gothu".... IT was nearly 8 pm by the time we left hebbal towards the hills....  n then i all got introduced i am really sorry i dont remember much names. It was Chaitanya,Srini,Arun,Priya Ravi,Doctor, pramod,Varun,Rama, PAllavi n many more not to miss Garima...

it was at night 10.30 when we reached a village outside chikkaballapur.. from where the trek had to be started... was nearly a 6-7 kms of road trek thru the night.. hill was small n was around 1.5 kms in height took around 1.5 hrs to complete it...By the time we trekked it was almost 3 AM..

Than came the time of Pallavi after the camp fire was prepared by Ravi,Vinay,Varun n many others.... All of them were like stop it pallavi plz.... she is one of a brilliant person i thought i had ever met... has so much knowledge... n rag u like anything..... all had there turn one after the other came to mine was pretty much less intense than others... but when pallavi came it was like feast for all the waiting foxes.... question after question was put to her but she being a confi person gave back nicely to all n sang a beautiful song as well....

by 5 am all wanted to sleep so had put up there tents... by the time we also slept ravi got a call for doctor telling his tent was facing trouble as it was too windy out on top of the hill.... by the time me varun n raam reached the tent.. the tent got completely blown.. so i and raam tried to hold it n fold it... at that moment it was a life holding scene for me n raam as tht tent opened completely n dragged us like a parachute without any preparations.... "that was an end for all our ideas in folding the tent...." gave us chills like never before....

by 8AM all were up and ready to leave by now an ace was waiting for us down the road to drop us back to the vehicles whr we had parked...

So was a very brief about the experiences which i had... But had still more experiences n will look forward go with BASC whenever they plan one....

A writeup from Vinuthna,

Hi Vinay,
This is my First night trek So I liked it a lot,
To find out a way to reach the hill in the night time is very difficult,We walked through many trials to sort a way,
Some how we reached to Top of the hill, here started our trouble,Extreme winds are blowing through us,
We enjoyed a lot with Camp Fire in that winds and the interaction the team members,
Bit scared about pallavi ragging, when it comes to my turn she asked a simple question to tell five Novels of Famous Novelist "Yandamuri Veerendrenath" :).
I was not able to stand as the wind is pushing me back,Setting up tents is one more challenge for us,
Hardly I slept for 20 mins and saw the Sunrise from the top of the hill,Its an beautiful experience for me,
Even though its a small hill the view of the villages, farms, flower garden below the hill are awesome,
Team members are also very friendly and had a good time with all of them,

Brahmagiri is a hill adjacent to Nandi hills near a place called Nandigrama. This was my second trek with BASC after the Ghati Subramanya night trek for beginners and I was all excited about it.
We boarded 8.45Am train at majestic and reached Nandi railway station in about 2 hours. From there we travelled around 20 mins in an auto to reach the base of the hill. We got our lunch packed from a nearby restaurant and started the trek at 11.45 Am.
The climb was a mixture of open wide areas and narrow paths passing in between thorny shrubs. On the way up in between some of us thought of trying a shorter route, so we got split up and explored a new route, but we ended up reaching at almost the same time as the new route was relatively tougher with more narrower and thornier paths. After taking several breaks in between for photo shoots and snacks.. it was almost 2 when we reached the peak. The view from the top was awesome. We had our packed lunch there viewing the scenic beauty around.
We started back by around 2.45.. The descend was very fast as we had to catch a train at 4.15 ( as we had spent lot of time clicking photos while climbing :) ) .  Luckily we all made to the base within 4.. the autos were waiting for us at the base to take us back to station. We reached just in time for the train.
Thanks to Mudassar who had reached the station ahead of us in a bike and had taken tickets, we were able to board the train :)  .. and were back at majestic by 6.15.
It was great fun trekking and also got to make new friends.
Thanks BASC for organizing such treks for beginners like me. These 2 treks I went have surely made me more confident and prepared for tougher ones :)
Looking forward to many more treks with BASC.

The Nandi hills range has views across the plains and ideal for hiking. Channagiri hill is densely covered with shrubs. The trek starts from a temple near Sultanpet and the track goes behind the hill and culminates at the hilltop taking wholly about 2 ½ hours.
At 56 Kms from Bengaluru, it is one of the five hills of the Nandi Hill ranges is one of the 5 major hillocks in the Nandi Ranges. The others are Nandi giri, Skanda giri, Deva giri, Dibba giri. The Nandi hills range has views across the plains and ideal for hiking.
Channagiri hill is densely covered with shrubs. A small temple and a stone water pool within a fort stands in ruins. Hardly used by trekkers, Channagiri is suitable for teams to enjoy nature at its best. Expect strong winds as you near the top. Adjacent Nandi Hills and Kalwarbeta are in full view from Channagiri
.
The terrain is very diverse, rocky at some places & evergreen forest on the slopes. The forest of the hill acts as a substrate for cloud condensation and every morning the trees are covered in water. This allows for many moist forest species of plants and animals. The hills are very rich in birdlife making it a very popular location for birdwatchers and bird photographers. The evergreen forest patch on top of the hill being a favored wintering location for many migrant species of warblers, flycatchers and thrushes. The forest patch is also home for a relict population of the Nilgiri Woodpigeon. A breeding pair of Shaheen Falcon, the resident race of the Peregrine Falcon is also often seen here. The Malabar Whistling Thrush, Uropeltid snakes and Pill millipedes which are otherwise known only from the Western Ghats ranges are also found here. The hill slopes are the home of the Yellow-throated Bulbul, a species endemic to the hills of peninsular India.

A brief Write up from Aishwarya.

An ad-hoc trail, moon-lit sky, polka-dotted butterflies and much more ………

A Friday evening never began on a more exciting note before. I rushed home just to check the confirmed list of participants for the trek and to pack my back-pack with essentials. Soon, I found myself at the Food Street in VV Puram with many other fellow trekkers waiting to head out of Bangalore. They were warm, down-to-earth and easy to gel with. We were a group of 10 or more when we began on our drive to the destination. A couple of cars and a handful of bikes joined in, making it a whopping group of 26 eager trekkers. With a few delays and hiccups on our way, we finally reached a picturesque village called Sultanpet past midnight. Sultanpet is a hamlet located in Doddaballapur Taluk, located amidst few hillocks known for adventure trekking. Nandi hills, Brahma giri, Skanda giri, Dibba giri and Deva giri were all visible at a distance.

After reaching Sultanpet, we parked all our vehicles in Dr.Harish’s house and began to walk towards our much-awaited destination Channagiri Betta, which was just a few kilometers away. The sky was lit by the big, bright full-moon. Its luminosity swept me off my feet and bade goodbye to the sleep throbbing in the corner of my eye. It was the beginning of the trekJ. The village was fast asleep under the glorious sky, not wanting to disturb their deep slumber, we maintained silence and whispered among ourselves as we walked ahead.
476358_451498648195965_948274584_o

It was past two in the night by the time we arrived at our destination. It was a steep hill with densely populated shrubs. After flashing a few LED torches in all directions, we decided to begin the trek uphill.

It was an ad-hoc trail, awaiting to unleash itself with each step. The plan was to reach the top in about 2-2½ hours to witness the night sky turn into dawn.

The trek began on an exciting note—the fact that it was a night trek on an unknown trail made it equally adventurous and challenging. The trail was covered with thorny bushes and the terrain was rugged with loose gravel. The torches and the moonlight helped us trek through it with caution. We did take a couple of short, quick five-minute breaks at various points, while we waited for the others to catch up. As we climbed up we could feel the drop in the temperatures. The breeze was cool and the view got better and better. There were Eucalyptus trees spreading their fragrance and giving us company from a distance. The peeping moon behind the trees made its way to the top, mesmerizing us with its majesty.

After nearly two hours of restless trekking we seemed to have conquered a certain height. Phew! Many of us decided to perch ourselves at that point, while a handful of others went in search of the trail ahead. We chatted and listened to music, a few indulged in the setting dawn and the tranquility of the surroundings.

DSC_5508

Unfortunately, we didn’t have much luck with the trail ahead, so we decided to wait till the dawn set in. Meanwhile we collected a few dead shrubs and managed to light a campfire. It was a perfect treatment to the falling temperatures. We sat cozily around the burning twigs and introduced one another in a sequence. It was overwhelming for me to see a motley set of people from different backgrounds sharing a similar passion for trekking and to explore nature.

The chirruping of the birds, chilling breeze, the mist on top of the Nandi hills and the dew drops on the shrubs welcomed the much-awaited dawn. All the expert camera men were busy with their morning shoot, while a few finally discovered the way to the top. But, emmm…umm…to our surprise, we realized that we were exactly on the opposite side of the peak. With a few “Hmpfs” and “Grrrs” we trekked a few meters back and forth only to realize that we had one more uphill climb to do. But, it didn’t matter because the pandemonium finally came to an end. The destination was filled with mist covering the lush-green shrubs and trees and it offered a beautiful view. We desperately went ahead with the climb. The climb was steep with boulders on the path unlike the earlier trail. We trudged, we lugged and struggled and we finally reached our destination. Hurray!!!!

DSC_0283

The altitude offered a spectacular view to die for. There were ruins of an old fort, on the top. I climbed the walls of the fort and took a stroll, the vast view from that point gave me a trippy and a hallucinating effect.

We all reached the destination one after the other and each one enjoyed it at their own pace. After reaching, many fell asleep with a sense of achievement and pride while, some walked around and explored the area more. The others who were awake made tea and Maggie to beat the exhaustion.

It wasn’t long before the sun reached its peak. The summer heat was beginning to catch up. We decided to head downhill and we began our descent at noon. The path was clearly marked and left little or no room for confusion. It was a few kilometers downhill and it took us a couple of hours before we all reached Sultanpet again. The trail downhill took us through vineyards and farmlands, reminding us of our roots. I was also delighted to encounter a variety of butterflies on the trek downhill—Polka-dotted, Common Castors, small and pale green, commonly spotted on city trails and not but not the least the dark Striped Tiger.

This was my first trek with BASC and it truly was an enjoyable experience. This shall definitely be part of my life journals as one of the most memorable treks that I have been on.

I used to be picky and rigid about the idea of trekking with an unfamiliar group. Trust me this is a water shed guys J. I thoroughly enjoyed and exhausted myself and I hope to play witness to many more.

I would like to thank and yell out three cheers to the organizer “Vinay” and to all my fellow trekkers for making this so special.

 Writeup from Arun Patil:
From very long time I had been hearing about BASC and the events they organize to trek/trips and all. Later when I heard from my friend telling registrations for Dhoodh sagar trek is open. I decided to register and so I did. On a boring Friday evening I got a mail from Vinay stating registrations for chennagiri hills/night trek. Immediately there was a glow in my face. Took my cell out and send a text to Anand(Andy) “Come online soon”. And there he was pinging me what happened. I told him about the trek and his reply was lets go. Even before thinking about asking my parents of going (which I have to always have to :/) I registered for this. Later heard andy telling I asked my mom and she said yes. I was like “ :-0 “ . Then the later part is bit boring which I don’t want to describe (fought and convinced parents :P)..

So Andy said I knw the organizer, there I was asking his facebook profile link, and I sent him a friend request with a message, im andys friend coming to the trip . Which I felt I should have done. Things u do when ur excited is not in our hands I know :P.

DSC_0298
Saturday evening while I was getting the bike chain lubricated got a call from Priya , I realized I could have told her about the trek and asked her casually “u coming” then I came to know she is interested and I made a call to vinay , “ is it ok if I can bring a friend of mine, she wants to come “ . Vinay was a bit hesitant and was kind enough to say okay J (thanks bud for that yes). Later that night, my self and priya left home (apparently we are neighbours) and decided to meet andy near KR puram Bridge. As usual Priya never had dinner and said im damn hungry I want to have dinner. Okay we said and went to a hotel, priya and andy got introduced. There she was hogging chicken , which made me and andy mouth watering, sadly andy never takes non veg on sat and I just had my dinner before leaving home.

Then we were in front of cauvery theatre in no time (sorry I don’t have a watch n don’t keep track of time :P) . There came nagaraj in his bike (1/2 iron man ) and behind was dimple cheeked girl Gayatri .. Saw that nice smile on nagaraj face as soon as he removed his helmet. (Guys im not being gay here J) .andy greeted them and priya and myself were looking at each other face withand expression “even I knw no one”. Then greeted nagaraj and gayatri . Then came one of my fav cars Chevy BEAT, from which vinay got down. Recognizing him from facebook pic I greeted him. Then we all gathered near by Dr Harish car. Where I met raveendra, varun , vinay , and they started teasing about how could you give your bike to a girl and please check the indicators after coming if could have been broken.

DSCN2162

Moved to Harish house to we parked our bike safe inside and boarded the xylo. This was the time wen started to free our self with each other whom we had recently met. We waited for the chevy beat to come and we met Kavitha and Ashwal cruising in bullet classic (wondering if it was 300 or 500cc). After parking the vehicles at a place. We all started to move with our leader in the front. My Dear dogs doing their duty by barking seeing a grp of people wandering their locality at night. Anyways just when we moved away from the village walking briskly, everyone noticed the beauty of the moon light striking the ground making us feel there is no use of the torch lights which we bought. Just as we started enjoying the walk under the moon light, the leaders were searching a path to start trekking. We halted at a place and waited for everyone to be under one group. All the small grps joined and the attendance was taken (mine was 14 th :P)and we moved on walking further. There was a place where vinay and others started exploring the trail. We stood watching them and helping them by throwing some torch light. It was too bushy n thorny (lol , dunno y lol after hearing the words :P bushy n thorny).I heard vinay saying at some point “I cant go further , I'm not wearing pants” I just giggled at myself. He had come in shorts and it was too thorny there. Ok so They then decided not to continue that route and we headed a little back to find another trail. Not sure if it was the right one, we all were very excited to start trekking.

There Started the actual trek with full energy racing between each other talking, making fun, breathing heavily…People got to know each other on the way introducing themselves , sharing water bottles, making way for others. So the feeling one family was picking up soon. There were a couple of places where we rested either waiting for others or waiting for the confirmation with people who were ahead of us, to knw if it was the right path. There were lot of thorns on the way, could see the bruises on the body. But all these were just adding to more fun and more sense of being adventurous. The steep was getting intense. There was a place when I heard from Vinay telling “The steep is close to 65% approx”. My dumb mathematical part of the brain woke up, thinking of what 65% would be on a protractor. After reaching a certain height, we could see Nandi hills opposite and we could see the city with lights. The body starting sensing cool breeze running in the air. Which eased our strain while we were resting on the steep side of the hill with very little grip to rest. The moon was almost began to disappear. The light was becoming dark. We realized we had to find a plce to camp. Few experienced trekkers went ahead in search of a place to halt, while we lazy ppl started to sleep listening to some nice music. (My best part of the trek) That moment which made us feel (atleast I felt so), hope life would be so cool with a sense of this relaxation forever. Just before my eyes about to shut. We were asked to leave and reach and that they have found a place to camp. So again the journey began for another 10 -15mins to reach the place best suited to put a camp fire.

DSC_0853
We started feeling cold, the breeze was getting cooler. We started collecting woods/small wood logs/ sticks/thorns and collected them on one place. Camphor/notes :P/grass all were tried to start the fire. Then some one had got a nice sheets of printouts. Then the woods caught the fire and in no time the flames were rising high. All started warming up themselves sitting close to the fire. Then after sometime gazing the fire, we heard from the captain, “Lets have the introduction session”. Just like kids behave seeing the principal, all sat in a position around the fire waiting for their turn. First was priya followed by me and then followed by other ppl :P. We all introduced ourselves teasing/ragging and making fun. There was one kind person distributing jamoons after each ones introduction and he was Raveendra, and there was another voice which made others to give a clap after each introduction , and she was Pallavi .(Felt like an introduction of a characters in film). So this way the introduction session was about to end while we started to see some day light. And in no time the light was clear and the photographers started to catch some nice view of mountain with clouds acting like hats to the mountains. The scene was beautiful.

DSC_0908

Then we decided to search for a way that could take us to the peak. The light was clear and after nice relaxation we were all set to start our trek to reach the destination. We started moving upwards again by taking lot of rests in between. I guess it was almost 7:45 when reached the peak where we saw a Anjenya temple (Hanuman temple) at the peak , with a small pond sort of think with stagnant water and a kalyani. Few people went in a hurry to just go and sleep, (I was one among them), just like our aim was to go to the peak and sleep. There were Photographers clicking some amazing pics and there was Hema trying to do some filmy stunts like flying the saree in the air and getting some pics J Sorry guys I really don’t know what happened after this coz I went into deep sleep. When I woke up I saw Nagraj sleeping on my stomach and some mixture all over my body. Then got up to see few ppl energetic as ever and few clicking pics and few preparing some snacks.

Then we had ppl preparing Maggie , and kavitha taking the role of chaiwala. Trust me that cup of tea was very refreshing in the morning after a tiery night. From here I was just dispersed not sure what people were doing. I saw Ashwal sleeping inside the temple, Priya running around like mad in hunger, Srini listening to songs on his broken i-pod, Anand taking pics, and so on, versatile Vinay searching for a place to go back down… After a lot of confusion to decide which place to take to reach to the bottom, we chose a route and thank god it was the right way. It was pleasing to see steps all the way

DSC_0359
to the bottom of the hill. Many were wondering what would be the case while climbing down when it was so steep. And then began the journey downwards as the sun started showing his power on us. We finally made it to the ground in no time. We reached the village , and the farmer was letting water in a 4 inch pipe :-). where we almost took bath. And continued walking to reach the road. Then we all gathered on the car and on the way back we had coconut water felt refreshed and drove back home . Sorry to end this essay, write up so abruptly at the end as my keyboard started to feel the pain while I'm hitting those key hard J

Write up from Dr.Harish:
Namasthe Ellarigu,
Thank You all for making this a memorable event to cherish. It was wonderful moonlight trek. I still cant believe that it happened....for I have been viewing this Channagiri hill for 37 years ( remember I told u that the place we parked our vehicles happens to be my maternal grandma's home & birthplace), also daily during my high schooldays @ Satya Sai High School in Muddenahalli. Every time I made an effort together a group among friends to trek this hill went unsuccessful.

I had no clue what is in waiting for me when I joined the Bangalore ASCENDers (BASC) team at the esteem mall bus stop whenDSC01477-1 I decided to scale Skandagiri on the night of 27th Nov'10. I knew its going to be fun as Skandagiri challenges your ability to climb altitude’s and my very first visit to the place was nothing but a hilarious one.
Having nothing much to do on a weekend, I insisted that Arun joined me for the trek. He did, happily. The other reason why I chose to go with BASC is Satish. This man is made of Red bull, Gatorade and laughing gas. His sense of humor will keep you alive and active. A good leader who can lead his pack to the destination with nothing but a fun-filled journey. There is a lot to learn from him as he carries a deep character and maturity . We started as decided and t ook the road to Skandagiri betta. Azhar in his Hero Honda Hunk proved why a 150 CC bike is always better than a 125 CC one. A few Royal Enfields joined us with its signature sound. I really want to own a royal Enfield, a Thunder B
DSC01370-1ird would do.
When we stopped at the T-junction where the road leads to Nandi Hills, for all to re-group and go together, the cops came with their so called authority and abused us that the youth is making Nandi hills a wretched place. True, may be a few... not all.
3 bikers showed us an interesting fireworks by pressing the center stand against the road while the bikes were on the move. That created sparkles on the road. At night, it was even more fascinating. Now I knew why the policemen were mad at us. After parking the vehicles at a safe place near the base and while waiting for others to join, I took a power nap on leaning against a temple pillar.
Carry a torch, a litre of water, wear a good Jerkin, travel lite and go with friends. My personal opinion is
DSC01451-1 to carry a beer. ( Not allo wed when you go with BASC). Drop that idea when you have girls in your gang. The trek started very smooth. You know very well, that anything starts very smooth wouldn't remain that way for too long! After 3 hours of various pace in climbing, breaks and jokes, we reached the summit.
It was dark and Ice cold, but it was filled with energetic people who braved to push the mountain beneath their feet. Hurrah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We made it!
Wait the best is yet to come...
Our antakshari at the chilly mountain moved the nature Gods and ordered the sky to throw a silver lining on the horizon. All rushed to the sunrise point to get the best view of Sun that was ready to come out of its blanket of clouds. There started the inexplicable display of mother nature's soap opera.
Blue, magenta, orange, Sky blue
DSC01400-1, green, white... She changed her attire every second making us marvel at her abundant ability to be volatile. Thank God! I didn't carry my camera along. The clouds caressed us with its invisible touch, paraded in front of our eyes in all possible shapes. Moved around, ran around, covered the near by hills and disclosed it again after a breeze drove it away. Nandi hills was a visual treat from Skandagiri. It looked like a black forest chocolate flake inserted on a vanilla ice cream bucket! Someone help me in describing it Please. Now I learn, the best things in life are the ones that are very hard to explain in words. Cos when you fail to explain, perhaps, there are only three reasons.
1. Its really awesome
2. There is no equal or matching vocabulary
DSC01457 to key in exactly what you experienced through your eyes, nose and all the senses that made you feel that experience.
3. The impa ct was too huge, you went numb!
Think again, how many times you've used the word "Awesome"? On all those instances, you've failed to explain things as it is. Awesome!!!
Thank you Satish ( BASC ) for arranging such a wonderful trek. I caught up with a lot of friends that have been appreciating and criticizing my photography through face book and Orkut. It was nice meeting all.
Trust me BASC changes your life for good! It did for me!
Let me know your comments. Good and constructive, it makes me write more!
